A year ago today, I married Miguel Angel Peralta.
It was a Monday. The weekend before was San Francisco Pride and we stayed at a stranger's home via a website called Couchsurfing. The room was Japanesque. We rolled around on the small bed in the room before we were told some great news from Miguel's mother. We were already celebrating the fact that Prop 8 was struck down and our LGBT community could marry again in California! There was even more good news, though. Our town, West Hollyood, was hosting free wedding ceremonies for a whole day! Miguel's mom told us to not waste the opportunity.
We debated. We were already engaged. The only problem was the timing! The opportunity was on July 1, not July 7 like we wanted! (That's a story in itself as to why we wanted the 7th.) We said yes.
Early Monday morning, we left a cold San Francisco to rush back to sunny West Hollywood before the ceremonies were closed. We researched the night before where we could get our marriage license along the way and we dashed to Fresno.
Fresno, by the way, is a small not-much-to-do kind of town. We decided to get our license there, though. Oddly enough, Miguel joked along the way that it would be funny if we were interviewed. We were. We were interviewed by a local radio station. From then on, I joke that Miguel shouldn't joke about things unless he wants them to come true.
We drove the fastest we could. Along the way, we talked and talked and talked. We created a vision statement of our marriage. I recommend everyone doing it for their own relationship. To this day, we have ours framed.
We were almost too late, but we made it within the last hour. We were tired. We quickly dressed with what we had and took our place at the altar. We had one stranger be our witness and a kind lesbian take photos of our moment. We said, "I do."
It was such a wonderful moment for both of us...until Miguel needed to sit down. He almost passed out! (Mostly due to driving the entire way of 8-9 hours)
Our reception was at the Abbey, where we had complimentary champagne and wedding photos. We were married! I was finally Josiah Peralta. I was so happy and still am.
I am proud to say that I am married to a wonderful man. He takes care of me and loves me for who I am. Sure, we have our frustrations, but at the end of the night I have a great guy holding me in his arms as we fall asleep. I found love. I love you, Hunnybunch! Happy 1st Year Wedding Anniversary! Muah!
