You know, I'll admit. I've forgotten about this blog for a time because of some problems. I haven't been the happiest because of monetary issues. Miguel and I are not enjoying what Barcelona has to offer. I have been negative and just wanting to move away to a random farm where I know we could be fed and have a bed. But I shouldn't be that way. I've also been so bad with my moods that my husband has been pushed to his limits to keep me happy. I cannot believe how much he has gone through...just because of me. That HAS to change. I love him too much to be that awful.
I'm pushing myself to be positive. I need to for my loved ones and myself. Being a depressing, negative person doesn't help anyone. So, I'm being a big boy and taking responsibilty. I am determined to find a job.
We've agreed that I might can find a job in the UK, especially since I have been having a difficult time learning Spanish. Even in full immersion! I'm trying, though. I got to do more. So, I am going to get in contact with some people at a community center to talk with me and I can help with their English. I want to be able to speak to my familia back in California. I don't want to be embarrassed when my mother-in-law says encouraging words and I understand half of what she said. (I'll admit that I broke down and cried when she, who has a difficult time speaking English, was able to tell me, "Don't worry, be happy". She's unbelievably supportive of us.)
So, I'm searching for local jobs and possible chances in the UK. One of the reasons is that our 90 day tourist visa in the Schengen area will end on September 4th. Then we become illegal immigrants and have to be careful when we cross borders or the polic are asking for passports. Luckily, the police here in Spain are lazy and would not want to be given more work than necessary. The worst that can happen would be that we are caught and the following happens: deportation to the USA, be charged for that flight, and get stamped as an illegal immigrant. If given that stamp, it would be harder to visit Europe and we'd have to apply for a tourist visa, instead of just having it. We're willing to take that risk. :-p
I'm hoping for something here because I don't want to leave my husband. Plus, it would feel weird when I could return AND be a legal immigrant when my husband would be illegal. If I could have a job, what about sending money to my baby? I'd have to try and have a bank account. Blah! But there is good news! Our friend Leslie has some connections in the UK where we might have work.
We've had other thoughts of trying to use a site called www.workaway.info. I've mentioned that we could stay at some places in exchange for work around their place, such as nanny jobs or farmwork. Why not? But the thing is the fact that we don't have money to go to these places. So, money problems....what can you do but try and find work?
We're hopeful.
Good news: Miguel has found work for September. He would tutor business men in English on Fridays. That would give us 200 euros a week. Enough to buy groceries and pay for a small apartment a month. 800 Euros a month. Our roommate Aldo makes more money at Burger King....which I've considered but they only accept people with work visas. Of course they do. Why should a company risk being fined?
Also, we made a friend called Tamara. She needed help with a paper for her Master's and it happened to be something that Miguel is intereted in - Linguistics! She paid us some money, but she liked us so much that she wants to go have a beer! Now, that would be a change of pace.
I have hope in us. I know we can do it. We just have to keep being active and positive.
