On a Saturday night, Miguel and I carpooled with our roommate to see his friend, Bob. We were interested in meeting Bob because of one thing - he lived in Barcelona.
Before this opportunity's door even opended, a week ago, I debated whether I should even mention to our roommate of our travel plans. After we bought our tickets, I mentioned that the date was set for Europe to our roommate. He asked where we were flying into and we said Barcelona. He then mentioned that a friend of his was in LA after had leaving Barcelona. I was astonished! Of all the luck, we might be able to speak with someone face-to-face who has lived among the people of Barcelona!
Back to the car. We met Bob at a boisterous cafe where we chatted about Spain for, almost over, two hours! He had so much energy and was full of so many insights. He was excited for us and wanted to help us in any way possible. He learned that Miguel knew many languages and is a linguist. He said that is going to be our biggest advantage. He told me that it is going to be a unique feeling to become the "exotic" person in the room, being an American. Bob told us of the Catalonians (the people of Barcelona) and how they despise speaking Spanish. Bob spoke of how there is only one Spanish flag in Barcelona among the many flags of Catalonia. He told stories of the infamous thievery in Barelona, but the lack of any other violence. He went on about the differences of Europe and the USA, of Spaniards and Catalonians, and of the love he developed for Spain. There was so much to talk about, so much to learn.
We enjoyed Bob's company and he wasn't going to stop talking until our roommate mentioned he needed to go to bed soon, since it was midnight and he had a scuba class in the morning. Bob gave us his information and wanted to see us again. He really wants to help us have the best experience possible in Europe (maybe help us with residency)!
After meeting Bob, all my worries were replaced with pure excitement! I can't wait to see Bob again and create detailed plans for Europe.
Bob plans to return to Barcelona. He has lived in Amsterdam, Paris, Italy, and Madrid. He teaches English, is a photographer by hobby, and is writing a book about his experience in Europe.
We just made a major connection!
